Genital Herpes Is a sexually transmitted infection caused by the herpes simplex virus.
The most common way to manifest itself is with itching, redness and/or small white blisters in the genital area. In men it manifests itself most often in the glans and the foreskin. Although the majority of infected persons are unaware that they have it because they do not exhibit visible signs of herpes simplex.
Causes
There are two types of infections of the herpes simplex virus that can cause it:
- Herpes simplex Virus type 1: This type, usually causes cold sores or fever blisters on the mouth area. It is spread by skin contact, however, can be extended to the area of the genitals through oral sex. The recurrences are much less frequent than infections by the herpes simplex virus type 2.
- Herpes simplex Virus type 2: This type, often causes genital herpes. It is spread through sexual contact and contact with the skin. The herpes simplex virus type 2 is very common and highly contagious.
Treatment
Genital herpes to the present has no cure, medications can relieve the symptoms and reduce the risk of infecting other people. Usually, antiviral medication indicated for the Urologist to treat herpes are the acyclovir and valaciclovir.
Prevention
The way to prevent the spread of genital Herpes, as with all sexually transmitted diseases is to use condoms.
