Kidney cancer is the fifth most frequent in Argentina, with more than 5000 new cases detected in 2020, affecting mainly men. This disease is known to be silent, as in its early stages often has no symptoms. In fact, most of the early diagnosis is performed during routine tests, such as ultrasound, or mri, performed for other medical reasons. The early detection of kidney cancer is critical, as it can significantly increase the chances of success in the treatments.
Factors such as obesity, smoking, hypertension, and excessive alcohol consumption increase significantly the risk of developing this pathology. Men with obesity have a 25% greater chance of developing kidney cancer, while in women, the risk is 22%. In cases of severe obesity, this risk is likely to increase by up to 120%. Experts recommend avoiding these habits of risk and to promote a healthy lifestyle with regular physical activity, as this not only helps to control weight and blood pressure, but it also strengthens the immune system.
The treatment of kidney cancer varies according to the location and size of the tumor, but usually involves a surgical intervention. Depending on the stage of the disease, can remove the tumor, a part of the kidney or the entire organ. The surgical techniques available include open surgery, laparoscopic, or, in more advanced cases, surgery robotics. Prevention remains the key: the annual check-ups and the adoption of healthy habits can reduce substantially the risk of developing this disease.
